Used Books, Puzzles and Games

Community Book Fair
Home and School is excited to announce our upcoming Community Book Fair, where students will have the chance to shop for gently used books at amazing prices—just a buck or two! The event will take place at the school, and all proceeds will go directly to Willingdon Home and School.

To make this event a success, we need your help! Please consider donating gently-used books, as well as complete puzzles or games. Your donations will give our kids an opportunity to find new reading treasures while supporting our school. This new format also aligns with our commitment to Green initiatives, by encouraging reuse and reducing waste.

What happened to Scholastic Book Fair?

There are two main components to our decision to move in another direction this fall, they are as follows:

Value for Money

We want to be conscientious of the costs involved in our offerings. The rising prices of Scholastic books and trinkets have resulted in most kids bringing in $20-40 to be able to purchase an item or two. Only a tiny portion of that amount is coming back to the community as Scholastic Rewards only. Shipping costs for the items we choose as rewards are costly, meaning we must raise funds another way just to redeem the rewards. Moving to a Community Book Fair will allow us to minimize the cost to families and maximize the benefit to our community. Sending $5-10 per child will be more than enough and 100% is coming back to the community.

Intentionality

We have considered carefully the implied messages of our events to our kids. We want to foster awareness of the impact of always buying new, especially when it comes to the more transient items that spend days or even mere hours in our children’s hands but potentially centuries in landfills. The Community Book Fair will seek to normalize buying used and encourage more eco-conscious spending practices, with the added bonus of decluttering our own homes!
